About the Hungarian language

The Hungarian language (magyar nyelv in Hungarian) is a Uralic language, classified as part of the Ugric subgroup in the Finno-Ugric group. Hungarian is most similar to the Khanty and Mansi languages that are spoken in Western Siberia. Hungarian is the most populous non-Indo-European language in Europe.

There are approximately 13 million Hungarian speakers around the world, 10 million of whom live in Hungary.

It is the official language of Hungary and in some regions of neighbouring countries. It is one of the official languages of the European Union.

Modern language: alphabet, vocabulary, spelling, grammar

Modern Hungarian is written using a modified Latin alphabet where letters with diacritic marks represent sounds that the standard Latin alphabet reproduces.

The Hungarian language has been influenced highly by other languages due to the fact that it evolved in separation from other Uralic language speakers. There are loanwords from Turkish, Iranian, German and Slavic, however the core of the vocabulary is derived from Finno-Ugric roots.

Hungarian is a highly inflected language – Hungarian nouns can have up to 238 forms. It uses various affixes to define a word’s meaning and grammatical function.

Verbs have two conjugations (definite and indefinite), two tenses (past and present-future), and three moods (indicative, conditional and imperative), two numbers (singular or plural), and three persons (first, second and third).

Word order in Hungarian is free – the object is defined with a suffix and not its place in the sentence.

History of the Hungarian language

It is believed that Hungarian began its evolution as a distinct language approximately 3,000 years ago when ancestors of Hungarians moved from the region of the Ural Mountains and the language separated from its closest relatives – Ob-Ugric languages.

Hungarian ancestors first settled near the Black Sea around 400 AD, where they were genetically and linguistically influenced by the Turkics.

Later, ancient Hungarians moved to the present territories of Hungary. In around 900 AD, Hungarians established their first state. Hungarians are believed to have used their Old Hungarian script from the 7th century AD.

In 1000 AD, the country became the Kingdom of Hungary. With this, the Latin language became the official language of the state and documents were written using it. Latin script ousted Old Hungarian, although it was used in some parts of Transylvania until the 17th century.

Pieces of written Hungarian appeared in Latin texts from the 11th century. The first completely Hungarian written text, “Funeral Sermon and Prayer”, dates back to 1192.

From the 13th century, a modified Latin alphabet with diacritic marks was adopted for written Hungarian.

With the appearance of printing in the 16th century, the Hungarian language began its period of stabilisation and standardisation. Significant steps towards standardisation were taken in the 19th century.

The Hungarian language was suppressed during the Austro-Hungarian Empire when the German language dominated in the upper classes. In 1918, after the dissolution of the empire and establishment of the Hungarian Democratic Republic, the status of the Hungarian language recovered.
