Assuring proper terminology for a specific translation

A high-volume translation project with in-depth terminology research, where we ensured all quality processes were followed from start to finish.

- translation, editing, layout and post-layout reading of over 120,000 words/508 PDF pages

- documents translated: catalogue and pricelist of equipment for professional kitchens

Introduction

The client planned an expansion of their products for new markets: France and Germany. A small portion of their materials had already been translated into French and German, mainly the product selling/purchasing system/programme, and it was crucial to preserve terminology consistency across this system, as well as in the product catalogue and pricelist.

Challenges

We were faced with highly specific material: professional kitchen equipment. Retrieval of the best translations of terms from existing materials and assembling client-specific terminology were the main challenges. Some terms were changed several times during the translation in an attempt to find the best possible terminology in consultation with language specialists and the client.

Solution

The glossary was created in consultation with several linguists. Cooperation with the client on terminology validation ensured better consistency throughout the client’s material and also helped to identify the best translations of terms.

Translation and validation in batches reduced the time spent on the texts.

We prepared the client’s InDesign files for translation and also handled the final post-layout reading to ensure the best final result.

Results

Thorough translation of specific material (equipment for professional kitchens) and tailored terminology chosen through a very selective and collaborative process. High-quality materials produced with consistent terminology.
