Case Study

Efficient Simultaneous Interpreting: Non-Standard Conditions and Budget Optimisation

We were invited to interpret during the Study Visit, which was also attended by representatives from the European Commission's DG REFORM unit. The visit involved sharing experiences and knowledge on inclusive education, including visits to Lithuanian schools and kindergartens.

Project summary

Client type:
European Agency for Special Needs and Inclusive Education

Languages, technology:
-English<>Lithuanian.

-Guide system (also known as audio radio broadcasting)

Goals achieved:

-Delivered high-quality interpreting for event participants

-Ensured a stable audio link between the interpreter and listeners

-Maintained mobility that allowed participants and the interpreter to move freely around the venues

Challenges

-Multi-site interpreting

The project required the use of mobile interpreting equipment due to the different locations during the event. The setup had to accommodate a large number of listeners, which demanded meticulous planning and precise technical coordination.

-Budget optimisation

Given the relatively small volume of interpreting required, it was essential to implement a cost-efficient setup. A tailored solution was needed to balance fiscal responsibility with operational effectiveness.

-Mobility and technical limitations

It was essential to source highly skilled interpreters with the expertise to operate mobile interpreting equipment effectively.

Solution

-High sound quality and mobility

We selected a guide system that allowed participants to move freely both indoors and outdoors.

The system included a transmitter with a microphone for the interpreter and receivers with headphones for the listeners. This type of radio system, widely used in tourism at major global attractions, offers comfort, flexibility, and accessibility.

Additionally, the event’s speakers and moderator were equipped with transmitters and microphones to ensure optimal sound quality for the interpreter.

-Cost-effective single interpreter

A single interpreter was trained to operate the guide system, enabling efficient service delivery without additional technical support.

-Experienced interpreterand thorough preparation

A specialist with proven expertise in both educational topics and interpreting technology was carefully selected for the assignment. The client supported the preparation process by providing the event programme, detailed topic descriptions, speaker information, and organiser contacts, ensuring the interpreter was fully equipped for the event.

Results

The project showcased how a well-planned, cost-effective approach can deliver high-quality simultaneous interpreting, even in complex, mobile, and multi-site settings. By combining the right technology with an experienced interpreter and thorough preparation, we ensured smooth communication and excellent value for the client.
